Designing the information architecture for the website of Milieu Centraal
Milieu Centraal is a Dutch public organisation that provides the public with practical information and advice on sustainable and environmental subjects. Back in 2014 I helped the organisation shape their new website by designing a fresh information architecture.
Back in 2014 we designed with TamTam a new website for Milieu Centraal. I was asked to provide the team with a new information architecture and page layouts. Later I also helped design the app 'Keurmerkenwijzer' which helps consumers get more insight in the many quality marks out there.

An improved information architecture
For my to come up with an improved information architecture, I set to work analysing all of the old website's content. I also had conversations with their content creators to find out what content strategy they had in mind for the new website. By applying rules and standards on how to design a proper information architecture, I soon had a logic structure to all of their information and subjects. The findability of subjects was then tested online with real users by using a technique call 'reserved card sorting' or 'tree testing. Here you give the participants tasks of finding a subjects within your newly designed structure of information. By doing this you get a better understanding of people's mental models. This helped me improve the information architecture.
This information architecture formed back then the outline for creating page layouts and wirefrimes. Up untill this day, even with their renewed website, they still use most of ideas behind the information architecture I designed.

Designing the new Keurmerkenwijzer App
One of Milieu Centraal its most popular web applications is the 'Keurmerkenwijzer'. This app can be used by consumers to get a better insight into the plenty quality marks placed on products out there.
For the design of the new app we wanted to provide users with an improved insight on each quality mark. Therefore the application should be simple and and clear. We looked if we could use consistent quality scores on all quality marks, so consumers can easily compare the many different quality marks. We ended up rating all the quality marks on aspects like environment, animal welfare and transparency. Also background information and information on the origin of the quality mark should help people understand what the quality mark exactly stands for.
